| DWT Frequently-Asked-Questions (FAQs)
What is a Dynamic Web Template?
Dynamic Web Templates (DWTs) is a highly specialized
template having editable and non-editable regions, which attaches to one or
more web pages. Web pages having an attached DWT are automatically updated
when non-editable regions are revised on the DWT itself; page specific
information is added on a page to page basis within editable regions.
What are the benefits of using DWTs?
 |
Safely enable Content Editors to edit page
content without messing up page code and common areas of the page. |
 |
Facilitate changes to the look of the web
site without bringing up every page in the web for editing. Especially if
you are using DWTIG compliant DWTs. |
 |
Webmaster can manage non-editable areas or
common areas that might contain site code and graphics that should not be
changed by content editors. |
 |
Any number of different DWTs can be applied
to pages in the same web unlike shared borders. |
What does it mean to Attach a DWT to a Web Page?
Dynamic Web Templates are "attached" to web pages in
FrontPage 2003. The template itself is not "applied" to the page; it is the
design of the DWT that is "applied" to the page by attaching the DWT. Within
FrontPage 2003, DWTs are attached by selecting Format, Dynamic Web Template,
Attach Dynamic Web Template.
What does the DWT Browser do for me?
FrontLook Dynamic Web Template (DWT) Browser
enables you to acquire, browse and manage your Microsoft FrontPage 2003
compatible Dynamic Web Templates (DWTs). There are three main components to
the DWT Browser:
 |
DWT Manager / Browser - enables you
to browse and view the list of available DWTs on your hard drive. This is
great for when you are browsing a large list of DWTs looking for one to
apply to the current web. It also copies the DWT to the current web so
that you can customize the DWT for that web without affecting the other
webs that might use that DWT. |
 |
Dynamic Web Template - sample DWTs
to use on one of your webs. |
 |
DWT Online Menu- enables you to
browse, view, purchase and install new DWTs from dynamicwebtemplates.com. |
What is a DWTIG Compliant Template and why should I
care?
DWTIG stands for Dynamic Web Template Interchange
Guidelines, established by a consortium of web designers and developers in
an effort to provide webmasters, using third party DWTs, the ability to
cross over from one design to another with relative ease. Once you have
spent the effort to convert your web to a DWTIG-compliant web site, then
switching the look of your web will be a simple 3 step process. See the
following tutorial for an outline of the steps.
What is an Editable Region?
Editable Region is any area defined on a DWT which can be
modified on a web page having the DWT attached. Editable Regions are
predefined by DWTIG.
Is Detaching a DWT from the page the same as
removing it from the page?
A DWT Detach operation is not the same as undoing a DWT
Attach. When you detach a DWT, you abandon the editable regions and make
them inline code on the page. After a Detach operation, the page have no
editable regions that can be mapped to a new DWT.
How do I altogether remove a DWT from a page?
You can use a DWT Stripper to remove the DWT. It will remove the DWT common
areas and only keep the editable regions that you want to keep.. The DWT
Stripper will be available on this web site soon.
General Problems
Problems with FrontPage can be often solved by reloading the page in your browser, recalculating
hyperlinks or performing a Help->Detect and Repair operation. |
