Using Thumbnails on your Web Pages

The Thumbnail capability is FrontPage is a great way to display pictures and screen shots in a compact and layered way. For example, here is a user interface dialog thumbnail:

If the viewer is interested in screen, they could click on the picture to see a full resolution version of the image or screen shot. The FrontPage Auto Thumbnail capability makes this easy to do.

Setting the Auto Thumbnail Options
Before using the Auto Thumbnail capability it is recommended that you set the Auto Thumbnail properties in the Page Options dialog.

Select the Tools->Page Options... menu, the Page Options dialog will appear. Press the Auto Thumbnail tab.

This panel allows you to set the standard size and border attributes for your thumbnails.

The "Set" popup menu allows you to set the standard width or height of the thumbnail in pixels.

Use the "Pixels" control to set the size of the thumbnail. A good size for thumbnails are between 100 to 200 pixels.

Many people will place a 2 pixel blue border around the thumbnail as a standard way of indicating that the image is hyperlinked to something.

You can also bevel the edges of the image if you wish.

Making a Thumbnail
Once you set up the Auto Thumbnail properties, its time to make the thumbnail.

Step 1: Insert the full size image onto the page using one of the many methods of placing an image on the web page.

Step 2: Right click on the image and select the "Auto Thumbnail" item from the popup menu.

The thumbnail image will appear with a hyperlink to the full size image.

Viewing the Larger Image in a new Window
The final thing you may wish to do is to setup the full resolution image to appear in a new browser window. This is easily accomplished by setting the full resolution image target frame to "New Window.

Step 1: Right-click on the thumbnail image and select the "Hyperlink..." item from the popup menu.

Step 2: Press the "Target Frame..." button.

Step 3: Select the "New Window" Item in the "Common Targets" list and press "OK" button and then "OK" button again in the Hyperlinks dialog.
