Trouble Shooting
Frequently-Asked-Questions (FAQs)
I had your Series 2 or Series 3 installed on my machine and then I
installed the Java Effects product and my Series 2 and 3 menus disappeared.
What happen to my Series 2 and 3 products?
The Java Effects product is a replacement for the Series 2 and 3 products.
You will note a new menu called FrontLook->Java Effects that contains all
the applets in the Series 2 and 3 products. If you only own the JFX LE or SE
products, your menu will reflect the applets that go with those products as
outlined below:
 |
FrontLook Java Effects LE
The FrontLook Java Effects LE is a light edition containing basic the
elements of the former FrontLook Series 3 product. This includes the
Scroller and slide show applets and the FrontPage theme set from the
former Series 3 product.
|
 | FrontLook Java Effects SE
The FrontLook Java Effects SE is a special edition containing basic the
elements of the former FrontLook Series 2 product. This includes
the image and text effects applets and the FrontPage theme set from
the former Series 2 product. |
I'm trying to insert an applet and I'm getting an error message "Could
not Get...from FrontPage" or "Mismatched URL...". What is going on here?
There are several possible reasons for this error message:
 | You might not have a web open in
FrontPage, rather only a page. Open a FrontPage Web |
 | You might not have a page in the editor
window. Open a page in the web for editing. |
 | You might not have a page that belongs to
the web open in the editor window. Typically when FP 2000 is opened up, it
presents you with a new page for the web and it is not part of the web
until it is saved. Either Open a page in the web for editing or save the
new page and then try inserting an applet. |
 | You had FrontPage 98 on your system and
you either uninstalled it or FrontPage 2000. Reinstall the version you
desire, this will register the FrontPage OLE server for FrontLook. The
FrontPage 2000 help menu has a Detect and Repair item you can use to fix
this problem. |
I inserted an applet on my page and
suddenly my computer is running slower and it sometimes crashes, what is
happening here?
Several of our customers have reported slow machine performance and even
crashing when editing a page with a FrontLook applet on it when the
Microsoft 'HTML Tool' add-in is installed and working. The 'HTML Tool'
add-in is available from the Microsoft Office web site and once installed
can easily be uninstalled. If you bring up a page with a FrontLook applet on
it, you may note that the application’s performance will be severely reduced
as the tool parses the page over and over. This tool is not that useful to
the everyday FrontPage user and it is recommend that it be disabled.
Disabling the HTML Tool:
 | Go to the FrontPage "Tools" Menu and
select "Add-Ins...". A "COM Add-Ins" dialog will appear. |
 | Select the "HTML Tools" Add-In item and
press the "Remove" button. You can reinstall the HTML Tools product by
re-running the installer. |
When I try to preview the applet using
the preview tab, all I get is a gray box. What is going on here?
Try saving your page and then preview the applet. It should preview fine
now. If not, please see the other FAQs below regarding the gray box problem.
I added an animated gif banner to the image list of the Presentation
applet and it won't display. What is going on here?
The Presentation applet does not support animated gif images.
When I insert an Applet and try to preview the applet, I get a gray
box in the browser when previewing the applet in a Netscape Browser.
It is likely that you have a space in the background image file name. Remove
this space from the file name and the applets should preview in the Netscape
browser.
I can't see the "_frontlook" folder, in my web. What is going on here?
To see "_frontlook" support folder in your web do the following: The
_frontlook support folder is a hidden folder. To view your hidden folders go
to the "Tools" menu and select "Web Settings...". Then click on the
"Advanced" tab and check the "Show Documents in Hidden Directories"
checkbox. Press the OK button. You will likely be asked if you would like to
refresh your web, press OK. Now you should see the "_frontlook" directory.
I inserted an applet in a Shared Border and it works on the pages in
the root of the web, but not on pages in subdirectories of the web. How do I
get the applet to operate on these pages?
See Using FrontLook in Shared Borders topic
for more information.
I brought up the FrontLook Java Effects User Interface and pressed the
"Preview" button to preview my applet and nothing happened?
You are likely running a older version of the Windows operating system
(i.e., Windows 95) and/or have an older version of the Internet Explorer
browser (i.e., IE 3). The applet preview function will only operate with IE
4.0 and above.
I want to use an image on my web as the applet's background image, how
do I do that?
To locate a background image on your web, do the following:
 | Bring up the FrontLook applet interface
and go to the Background panel. |
 | Click on the
Background Image button and then click on the "Add From Web..." button.
|
 | Browse to the folder which contains the image, select
the image and click on OK. The image will be added to the image list.
Click on OK again to set the image as the background image for the applet. |
 | Alternatively, you can click on the "Add
From Disk.." button, browse your hard drive to find the
physical location of your web. It will usually be in the "C:\Inetpub"
folder for served webs or the "C:\My Documents\My Webs" for disk webs. |
 | Select the image you wish to use as a
background image and click ok. The image will be added to the image list.
Click on OK again to set the image as the background image
for the applet. |
How do I make the Java Applet blend
with the background?
Java does not support a transparent background so you have to fake it by
selecting the background color or image of the page as the background of the
applet .To locate a FrontPage theme background image do the following:
 | Bring up the FrontLook applet interface
and go to the Background panel. Click on the Background Image button.
Click on the appropriate "Add File..." button. |
 | Browse your hard drive to find the
physical location of your web. It will usually be in the "C:\Inetpub"
folder for served webs and "C:\My Documents\My Webs" for disk webs. |
 | Now locate the "_themes" directory, and
look for the theme folder that would correspond to your theme name. In
there you will notice a large number of files. Look for a file name that
denotes a background image. This may take some trial and error guesses.
|
 | Once the image is selected in the
background image list, then select the "Tile Image" checkbox to make it
tile across the background area of the applet. If the image doesn't blend
well with the background, it is probably because the background pattern is
non-repeating. |
I insert an applet and it works fine on my local machine, but when I
ftp the site to my web server and I view the page, all I see a gray box
where the applet should be. What is going on here?
The gray box problem after uploading your site to your web server is most
likely caused by a missing "_frontlook" folder on the web server. If you
manually ftp the site to your web server, you must copy the _frontlook
folder to the web also. The _frontlook folder must be in the same directory
as the page that uses the applet. If you cannot see the _frontlook folder in
your FP Folders List, then go to the Tools Menu and select Web Settings...
Then go to the Advanced tab and select "Show documents in hidden
directories".
Why can't I size the Applet in the FrontPage Editor?
FrontPage doesn't allow sizing of components in the Editor. The Applet tab
of the FrontLook component allows you to set the size at the applet. If
you’re using an image, you will want to size the applet to the size of the
image. (See next question)
How do I size the applet to the same size as the image I have
selected?
Once you have selected the image you can press the "Size to Image" button to
set the applet size to the same size as the image.
Why is it when I import an image into my web, and try to set this
image as a background, I can't see the image?
If you just imported an image into the web, you may have to recalculate
hyperlinks.
Why so few fonts?
We use the platform independent standard fonts support by Java Applets. If
you specified fonts not supported by the Client System you would get
unpredictable results.
When previewing the FrontLook Applets with sound, the sound doesn't
cease when going back to "Normal" mode.
FrontPage keeps the Applet running in an off screen browser. To kill the
sound, simply preview a page without a sound applet on it.
General Problems
Many problems can be solved by reloading the page and/or recalculating
hyperlinks. |
