Copying old Shared Border information to your new Super Theme Shared Borders
By David Pfeiffer of FrontLook.com

When applying a Super Theme to a web that already has shared borders, a backup of the old shared borders will be placed in the _borders directory. It may be desirable to copy information from the previous shared borders to the new shared borders. This section outlines the procedure for doing this operation.

The _borders Directory

Note: if you cannot see the "_borders" directory in your FrontPage Folders list, then go to the Tools menu and Select the "Web Settings..." item. The Web Settings dialog will appear. Select the "Advanced" tab and check the "Show Hidden Files and Folders". Then press the "OK" button. You will be asked to refresh your web, press the "OK" button and continue. Now you should be able to see the "_borders" directory in your FrontPage Folders list.

If you take a look at the _borders directory, you may note several ".htm" files named; "top.htm", "left.htm", "right.htm" and "bottom.htm". Each of these files contains the current information for the corresponding part of your shared border page. If your web doesn't use a right shared border, then it is likely you will not see a right.htm file in the _borders directory. You may also note files that are extensions of the standard shared borders files with date code - version number in the name. These are the backup files of the previous shared border files made by the Super Theme browser when a new Super Theme is applied.

In the example web illustrated above, there is one left.htm files and several other left border backup files. One of these files is left-20010607-3.htm. The 20010607 part is the date code denoting that the left.htm file was backed up on the year 2001, the 6th month and the 7th day. The -3 is a counter of the number of times the left border has been backed up on that day (the highest number is the most recent backup).

To copy information form the latest left border to the recently applied shared border, go to the _borders directory and double click on the left.htm file and the most recent backup copy of the left border (left-20010607-3.htm in this case) as illustrated below in the tabs of the window:

Copy the Information
Now you can copy elements from the old shared border (left-20010607-3.htm)page and paste them into the current shared border (left.htm) page using the typical copy and paste commands in FrontPage. Once this is done, save and close the left.htm file. You can do this to the top, right and bottom shared border files as well.

Tip: When copying information from the old shared border page, be not to copy table information as it may not paste properly. Also image information that causes a cell to stretch may cause misalignment of the shared border graphics. It is recommended that you copy one element at a time and preview the results before adding more.

Note: The save of a shared border file takes longer due to the processing that FrontPage performs in appending the shared border data to every page in the web that uses the shared borders. You may also note that the navigation bars may appear as text message "[Add This Page...] when editing shared border pages directly, this is normal.

And That's It!
Using this process will speed the change of Super Theme borders with the minimum of rework.
