FrontLook.com Newsletter Tip

Volume 4 - Issue 2 - May 2004

The _frontlook Folder
By David Pfeiffer of FrontLook.com
In this months tip we answer some frequently asked questions about the way image and sound files are managed in the FrontLook Effect products (Java Effects, Component Effects and Page Effects).

Where are the external support files for the FrontLook Effects components stored?

The _frontlook folder contains all the external files to support our applets and components. If you have added and then deleted components to your web, you may have some files in your _frontlook folder that are no longer required.

I can't see the "_frontlook" folder on my web, where is it?

If you can't see the "_frontlook" folder in the "Folders List" of your web, select the "Tools->Web Settings..." menu item and then the "Advanced" tab. Check the "Show documents in hidden folders" check box and press the OK button. A dialog will appear asking you if you would like to refresh your web, press the "OK" button. You should now see the "_frontlook" folder.

When I go to add an image to one of my applets, there is a large number of images available in the "Image File" dialog. Where are these stored?

The standard image and audio files that come with the Effects product are contained in the _frontlook master directories. If you like you can remove the files that you don't want to appear in the "Image Files" or "Audio Files" dialogs from the master directories.

Master _frontlook directories for the Java Effects and Component Effects product:

FP2000:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\bots\FLWebbot\_frontlook

FP2002:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\bots\FLWebbot\_frontlook

FP2003:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\bots\FLWebbot\_frontlook

Master _frontlook directories for the Page Effects product:

FP2000:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\bots\FLEffects\_frontlook

FP2002:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\bots\FLEffects\_frontlook

FP2003:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\bots\FLEffects\_frontlook

How do I delete a file that I have added to the FrontLook image directory?

When you add an image to the FrontLook image or audio directory, these image and audio files are typically located in the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\DPA Software\FrontLook\_frontlook

where <user> is the currently logged on user. If you are running Windows 98 or ME, then you will find these files in the master folder mentioned in the previous FAQ.

After experimenting with different applets, I noticed many extra files in the _frontlook folder on my web. How do I know which files to delete and which ones to keep?

This can be accomplished by cleaning up the _frontlook Directory. To clean up the FrontLook folder, you must know of all the pages that contain FrontLook Java Effects applets, Page Effects and Component Effects products because you will need to open all these pages to reconstitute the _frontlook support files. If you miss a page, then you may disable that applet or component.

Step 1: Start by deleting the contents of the _frontlook folder on your web.

Note: Do not delete the support files for the Site Search Engine. These files have the following names: "SSECommon.asp", "SSECommon.php", "SSEHelp.htm", "sse_style.css" and a folder called "SSE".

Step 2: Then bring up the web pages with the FrontLook applets and component on them double click on each component and press the "OK" button. This will re-copy all the required support files to the web.

Step 3: Then test each web page to make sure your components are operational.

And that's it, please let us know if you have any other questions.
