How to Update your Web using a FrontPage Template
By David Pfeiffer of FrontLook.com
Recently we have released a new set of template designs in both Dynamic Web Templates (DWTs can only be used in FrontPage 2003) and FrontPage Web Template (FPWT) forms. We recommend the use of DWTs in web development for many reasons, but if you are using FrontPage 2000 or 2002, you can use FrontPage Web Templates to update the look of your web. This tip will overview this process.

This tip assumes that you already have a web site developed that you want to update the look of. If you would like to make a new web, see the FrontPage help file regarding the creation of a new web using a FrontPage Web Template.

Step 1: Backup your Web
As with any major update, its important to have access to the original data in case a mistake is made. We strongly recommend that you work on the copy of the web as this conversion process will take a significant amount of time.

Step 2: Setup a Master Page Template in your Web
First select the File->New Page or Web... item. The "New Page or Web" panel will appear. Press the "Page Templates..." link and the Page Template dialog will appear.

Page Template dialog

Select the page template you would like to use on your web and then press the OK button. The page template will appear in the FrontPage Editor. If required, use the "Format->Themes..." and the "Format->Shared borders..." menus to turn off the theme and shared borders settings for the new page.

Press the control-s key sequence to save the page. Name the page blank1.htm and press the OK button. Another dialog will appear asking you if you want to save the embedded files of the new page.

Save Embedded Files dialog

Press the change folder button to setup the saving of the images into the images folder. Press the OK button to the save the images to your Web. Now the blank page template is ready to use for page next step.

If you need other page designs in the update of your Web, follow the steps above to bring those template pages into your Web as well.

Step 3: Update each page in the Web
In this step the following steps are done for each page in the web to be updated:

bullet

Bring up the old page, lets call it "mypage.htm".

bullet

Make a copy of the blank.htm and name it "mypage_new.htm"

bullet

Copy the content from the old page to the to the new template page.

bullet

Save the new page.

bullet

Delete the old page (this will disconnect the page form the navigation).

bullet

Rename the new page the same name as the old page. For example: "mypage_new.htm" > "mypage.htm".

Do this for each page in the web to be updated.

Step 4: Rebuild the navigation of the web
Now rework the FrontPage navigation for the upper and left navigation bars. This may require reinserting the navigation bars on each page.

And That's it.
Now you can test the Web and it's navigation before publishing the new web to the server.
