Trouble Shooting Frequently-Asked-Questions (FAQs)

I don't like one of the images in the animation and would like to remove it or replace it with a small advertising banner, how do I do that?

See the Image Panel Reference page for how to remove or add an image to the page effect or cursor effect animation.

I'm trying to insert a page effect and I'm getting an error message "Could not Get...from FrontPage" or "Mismatched URL...". What is going on here?

There are several possible reasons for this error message:

bulletYou might not have a web open in FrontPage, rather only a page. Open a FrontPage Web
bulletYou might not have a page in the editor window. Open a page in the web for editing.
bulletYou might not have a page that belongs to the web open in the editor window. Typically when FP 2000 is opened up, it presents you with a new page for the web and it is not part of the web until it is saved. Either Open a page in the web for editing or save the new page and then try inserting the page or cursor effect.
bulletYou had FrontPage 98 on your system and you either uninstalled it or FrontPage 2000. Reinstall the version you desire, this will register the FrontPage OLE server for FrontLook. The FrontPage 2000 help menu has a Detect and Repair item you can use to fix this problem.

I added a Page or Cursor Effect to my web page and now another JavaScript stopped operating or the Page or Cursor Effect is not operating. What going on here?

Page Effects: The Page Effects can optionally reset the boundaries of the effects system when the browser is resized. It is possible that your page might already have a Page Resize handler that is pre-empted by the Page Effect JavaScript. You can uncheck the Install Page Resize Handler check box to remove the page resize handler.

Cursor Effects: The Cursor Effects implements a MouseMove event handler that may conflict with some custom installed JavaScripts. You maybe required to remove one of the JavaScripts components to get the other to operate properly.

I inserted a page effect on my page and suddenly my computer is running slower and it sometimes crashes, what is happening here?

Several of our customers have reported slow machine performance and even crashing when editing a page with a FrontLook component on it when the Microsoft 'HTML Tool' add-in is installed and working. The 'HTML Tool' add-in is available from the Microsoft Office web site and once installed can easily be uninstalled. If you bring up a page with a FrontLook component on it, you may note that the application’s performance will be severely reduced as the tool parses the page over and over. This tool is not that useful to the everyday FrontPage user and it is recommend that it be disabled.

Disabling the HTML Tool:

bulletGo to the FrontPage "Tools" Menu and select "Add-Ins...". A "COM Add-Ins" dialog will appear.
bulletSelect the "HTML Tools" Add-In item and press the "Remove" button. You can reinstall the HTML Tools product by re-running the installer.

I can't see the "_frontlook" folder, in my web. What is going on here?

To see "_frontlook" support folder in your web do the following: The _frontlook support folder is a hidden folder. To view your hidden folders go to the "Tools" menu and select "Web Settings...". Then click on the "Advanced" tab and check the "Show Documents in Hidden Directories" checkbox. Press the OK button. You will likely be asked if you would like to refresh your web, press OK. Now you should see the "_frontlook" directory.

I inserted a page effect in a Shared Border and now the effect occurs on most page, but not all. What is going on here?

Page and cursor effects cannot be inserted into the shared borders of a web.

I insert a page effect and it works fine on my local machine, but when I ftp the site to my web server and I view the page, it doesn't work properly or gives me Java Script errors. What is going on here?

The problem after uploading your site to your web server is most likely caused by a missing "_frontlook" folder on the web server. If you manually ftp the site to your web server, you must copy the _frontlook folder to the web also. The _frontlook folder must be in the same directory as the page that uses the page or cursor effect. If you cannot see the _frontlook folder in your FP Folders List, then go to the Tools Menu and select Web Settings... Then go to the Advanced tab and select "Show documents in hidden directories".

When previewing the Page Effects with sound, the sound doesn't cease when going back to "Normal" mode.

FrontPage keeps the sound applet running in an off screen browser. To kill the sound, simply preview a page without a sound applet on it.
